Welcome to my Yoga Story.
We all have a little story to share about how we ventured into our first yoga experience. I started my yoga practice in 1995 when I went to the Sivananda Yoga
Retreat in the Bahamas for a cheap vacation based on a NY Times review.
I had no idea how much it would change my life. I was there for one
week and have practiced yoga and meditation ever since. Sivananda is a
classical style of yoga and doesn't
traditionally use props. Their use of props are more like positive
thinking, noncompetitiveness and right action. All of which are very
effective for the spiritual side of yoga.
Before yoga, I mostly liked to run. My body was very tight and inflexible. Touching your toes was something that other people did. Forward bends were excruciating. As my practice developed and I discovered other yogic traditions I found props really helped me become more flexible.
From Student to Teacher
Five years down the road of serious daily practice I began teaching a couple of nighttime classes while my teachers, Rama and Rajam Ramanathan, went back home to India for a visit. So far I've completed two teacher trainings in Integral Yoga and Yoga Synthesis. One of the great things about yoga is that you are never finished learning. It's an ocean of information. Living near NYC gave me many opportunities to keep up my study.
Night & Day
Yoga keeps transforming my life constantly and gently. For many years I thought I was keeping my business and my yoga separate like they were oil and water, unable to mix. The truth is, that yoga was making me a happier business person - more patient and a better listener. My day job was creating hats which I still do (hoodlumhats.com). I have a vendor mentality and I like to make things. Making a useful product is a very gratifying experience whether it's a hat to keep you warm and protected or a strap so you can reach the seemingly unreachable. I'm happy to make these straps available. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
Namaste,
Jennifer
